Last week, Victoria made history by becoming the first state in Australia to pass legislation enshrining a Treaty with its First Peoples. Meli supports and celebrates this supports this outcome.
This moment – nearly a decade in the making – has been led by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and the broader Victorian Aboriginal Community. We want to acknowledge their leadership and the strength, resilience, and vision that has brought us to this point.
Treaty represents a new relationship between First Peoples and the State – one built on truth, justice, and the understanding that doing things differently is the only way to achieve real change.
It places decision-making in the hands of those who know best. Aboriginal people are the experts on their own communities, culture, and Country. Treaty will empower communities to use their local knowledge to deliver practical solutions that improve outcomes in health, education, housing, and more.
Most importantly, Treaty is an opportunity to move forward together – to acknowledge our shared history, to heal, and to shape a better future for First Peoples and all Victorians.
At Meli, we know this is just the beginning. Reconciliation is not a single act, but a continuous, collective journey. We are committed to walking alongside First Nations peoples – listening, learning, and taking meaningful action. Read more about this historic moment and what Treaty in Victoria means, here.
