Stories of resilience, compassion and lived experience took centre stage this month as more than 700 staff gathered at Geelong Arts Centre for the 2026 Meli All Staff Forum.
Centred on the theme Shared Stories, Stronger Communities, the forum celebrated the experiences and connections that shape Meli and the people it supports.
Opening the event, Meli CEO Robyn Hayles reflected on the organisation’s growth and the collective impact of staff across the past year.
“What really stands out to me about Meli are the stories – the stories of the people we support, the stories of teams stepping up for one another, and the quiet, often unseen moments where someone goes the extra mile for a client, a child, or a colleague,” she said.
“Today is an opportunity to acknowledge those stories, to reflect on the year that’s been, and to look ahead.”
One of the day’s standout moments came from keynote speaker Nasir Sobhani – known as The Streets Barber – who shared candid reflections on homelessness, addiction and recovery through his work providing free haircuts to people experiencing hardship.
Drawing on his lived experience, Mr Sobhani spoke openly about mental health, compassion and dignity, challenging stigma and highlighting the power of small acts of kindness.
“Even though life is hard and sometimes I don’t have the best days, I’m just reminded of my purpose,” he said.
“Cutting hair is a gift. I’m so lucky I’ve got it, and I use that to benefit those who come across my way.
“Everyone’s got something, and I really hope you guys realise your power.”
Staff also heard from Dr Catherine Keenan AM, Lael Stone and Shayne Hood, each offering distinct perspectives on storytelling, wellbeing and social justice.
Dr Keenan spoke about empowering young people to find their voice, Ms Stone encouraged deeper emotional awareness and stronger relationships, while Mr Hood delivered a confronting and deeply personal account of youth justice and supporting vulnerable young people.
In the afternoon, staff took part in interactive workshops designed to foster connection and wellbeing, including gardening, meditation, storytelling through art and naturopathy.
The day also featured the 2026 Meli Stars Awards, hosted by Anneliese Knell alongside Robyn Hayles and Tara Paatsch, recognising staff who embody Meli’s values and make an outstanding contribution to the community.
Ms Hayles acknowledged the contributions of staff and the difference they make across the organisation.
“Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and the commitment you bring every day,” she said.
The forum provided an opportunity for staff to feel inspired, reconnected and proud of the role they play in strengthening their communities.
