Farida had become her carer but also the household’s breadwinner. While she was eager and motivated to learn, the responsibility to support the family unit was mounting. Farida managed to find casual work packing fruit and vegetables but desperately longed for a career.
Farida started a course in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE but found the online delivery particularly challenging with English as a second language. Eventually she withdrew from the course but was determined to pursue another opportunity.
In 2022, Farida contacted Northern Futures on the recommendation of a fellow student. The Northern Futures program addresses disadvantage in Geelong’s northern suburbs by delivering tailored education and employment opportunities.
