Meli voices featured in Parity magazine

Meli’s leadership and frontline expertise have taken centre stage with the launch of the latest edition of Australia’s leading national homelessness publication.

Parity, a magazine published by Council to Homeless Persons, was launched this week featuring a series of articles from sector leaders exploring the intersection between homelessness and family violence.

At the heart of the July 2025 edition is an article co-authored by Meli’s Bernadette McCartney (Executive Director, Services) and Kristy Berryman (Manager, Family Violence).

Drawing directly from the experiences of our practitioners, their piece sheds light on the growing issue of men who use violence and are homeless, while also highlighting how homelessness complicates efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.

It is an ongoing problem in Victoria, where family violence continues to be the leading cause of homelessness.

To mark the latest edition of Parity, Ms McCartney was invited to speak at its launch in Melbourne on Tuesday 15 July, joining a panel discussion titled ‘Shifting the burden’.

During the discussion, she shared insights into the challenges of working with men who use violence and how services can better respond to their situations.

The event also featured the release of Bridging the gap between homelessness and family violence, a new research report from Council to Homeless Persons and Safe and Equal.

The report explores how to break down siloes and build a more coordinated response between the homelessness and family violence sectors.

Key sector leaders, including Victorian Minister for Housing Harriet Shing, were among the attendees at this week’s event.
