Meli has acted quickly to protect children across its network of 31 kindergartens after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced a national recall of certain coloured sand products used for children’s play and craft. The recall was issued following the detection of asbestos contamination in these products.
Following the recall announcement, Meli immediately removed all affected products from kindergarten environments and engaged qualified experts to manage disposal. The process has been carried out meticulously and with extreme caution, without necessitating kindergarten closures.
Meli CEO Robyn Hayles said the organisation responded promptly to the recall and was working closely with families to provide reassurance and practical advice.
“The wellbeing of children and staff at our kindergartens is always our highest priority. Our kindergarten staff have communicated with families to reassure them of the steps we’ve taken. We’ve also provided clear guidance so families can check their homes and stop using any recalled products immediately,” Ms Hayles said.
“Our focus is on ensuring children can continue learning and playing safely and without disruption, and I want to acknowledge the professionalism and care shown by our kindergarten staff throughout this process.”
The Commonwealth Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has advised that the risk to human health is low, and no follow-up is required for those who may have been in contact. Authorities are taking a precautionary approach while further analysis is underway.
The recall applies to Kadink Sand (1.3kg), Educational Colours – Rainbow Sand (1.3kg), and Creatistics – Coloured Sand (1kg), sold nationally between 2020 and 2025 through retailers including Officeworks, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids, Zart Art, Target and Kmart. Kinetic sand is not affected.
