Jesse’s journey: How one foster carer became ‘mum’ and changed his life

Foster care is a life-changing journey for children in need of safe, stable and loving homes.

In a recent interview on Bay FM, past care leaver Jesse Miller shared his powerful story of growing up in foster care and how it shaped the person he is today.

Jesse entered the foster care system as a toddler, moving through several placements before eventually finding a permanent home in Anakie with foster carer Raelene.

Over time, Raelene became more than just a carer – she became ‘mum’.

Jesse, now aged 20, speaks with deep gratitude about the stability and love she brought into his life.

“She made one of the biggest differences in my life, not by doing anything flashy, but by doing the things that a mother was supposed to do – like cooking me meals and giving me that sense of stability,” Jesse said.

He reflected on the importance of his foster carer mother, not just in providing a home, but in helping him grow into adulthood with confidence and support.

“A foster carer can make you feel really safe, and she made me feel so safe,” he said.

Motivated to draw on his past experiences to create change, Jesse spoke of his desire to become a police officer, hoping to help other young people going through what he once did.
