On Wednesday evening, Geelong landmarks were lit up purple as part of the Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre Candlelight Vigil in memory of the women and children who have died as a result of domestic and family violence.
Together with Safe Steps and The Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre, Meli called on the community to light a candle to honour those who have lost their lives as a result of this devastating issue.
Organisations including the City of Greater Geelong, Kardinia Park Trust, Deakin University, Barwon Health, Geelong Covent Garden by the Anthony Costa Foundation, Give Where You Live, Bay FM, Victoria Police, The Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre and some of the Meli buildings were illuminated in purple which was a powerful visual across central Geelong.
Geelong community members, including councillors and local businesses participated in the vigil on social media by lighting a candle at home and sharing with their friends and followers. This important message was shared with thousands of people thanks to the support from the community.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to light a candle, have a conversation and share the message about this confronting issue.
