Colac kindergartens dig into fresh food fun

Children at Meli’s three Colac kindergartens will soon be growing, cooking, and sharing their own fresh food as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation Program.

The kindergartens – Colac East, Wydinia and Winifred Nance – are among 13 across Colac Otway Shire to receive a two-year membership to the program, which helps children learn about healthy eating and sustainability through hands-on food experiences.

Michelle Muraca, Meli’s Manager Kindergarten Educational Outcomes, said the program would bring something special to each kindergarten’s learning environment.

“We’re delighted to be introducing the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program across our Meli kindergartens in Colac,” she said.

“It’s an exciting addition to our curriculum, offering children hands-on opportunities to grow, cook, and share fresh food in a collaborative environment.

“These experiences build lasting skills that will stay with them well beyond their early years.”

Educators will also have access to more than 1,200 recipes and activities, along with professional learning opportunities to help embed food education into daily teaching.

Since 2004, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation has supported schools and early learning centres across Australia to help children develop positive food habits.

The rollout in Colac is being supported by Colac Otway Shire Council through its partnership with VicHealth.
