Cheryl Flanagan Award Information

Meli is pleased to invite nominations from foster carers for children and young people in their care to receive the Cheryl Flanagan Foster Care Award. This annual award is to honour the memory of our friend and colleague Cheryl Flanagan whose dedication and commitment to the Foster Care Program and children and young people in care was exemplary.

All Meli foster carers are eligible to nominate a child or young person in their care to be considered to receive a particular item to help further the child or young person’s social, academic or physical development. The Cheryl Flanagan Foster Care Award will be up to the value of $1000 for one or more awards (e.g., 2 awards for up to $500 each) depending on the nominations each year.

Field Definitions and Possible Related Award Items

Social Development

It refers the development of social skills and emotional maturity that are needed to forge relationships and relate to others. An item may include youth group membership fee, movies vouchers, bowling vouchers, restaurant vouchers, concert tickets, Myki ticket, theatre package.

Academic Development

It refers to the accumulation of knowledge. An item may include specialist textbooks, IT hardware, tuition, educational sessions/classes, related experience in particular area.

Physical Development

It refers to physical growth and the development of fine and gross motor skills. An item may include sporting equipment (e.g., hockey stick), sporting club membership/registration fees (e.g., soccer club annual registration), sports gear (e.g., running shoes, helmet), Occupational Therapy sessions, musical instrument, musical tuition.

Guidelines for nominations for Cheryl Flanagan Award

  • A child/young person whom without this Award would be unable to obtain the item, and
  • A child/young person who has a demonstrated need of a particular item that would help further their social, academic or physical development, or
  • A child/young person who has demonstrated competency in a particular field of social, academic or physical development (e.g., athletics, mathematics…), or
  • A child/young person who has a passion for or special interest in a particular field of social, academic or physical development, however, may not have a demonstrated competency, or
  • A child/young person demonstrated commitment in the pursuit of a particular field of development.

Process for Award recipient selection

The Meli Care Services Manager will review nominations and select recipient/s.
Carers will be advised by phone and invited to attend the presentation at the Meli Foster Carer Appreciation High Tea held on Wednesday 10 September 2025.
