Apology for Historical Adoption Practices

Meli unreservedly apologises to those impacted by the historical adoption practices of its predecessor agencies and acknowledges the lifelong pain and suffering caused by the forced separation of mothers and babies.

We express our heartfelt regret for the trauma caused to the mothers, and the ongoing impacts of these past practices on fathers, children and extended families.

To those who face the difficulties of reconnecting with family and establishing ongoing relationships, we are sorry.

To the mothers who were forced to give up their babies, we recognise your loss of rights and the heartache you have endured. We acknowledge with remorse that forced adoption was wrong and we deeply regret the harm caused by these practices.

We also apologise to those who were adopted or removed and raised in a culture that was not your own.

We recognise the loss of a sense of identity and personal history experienced by some and we are truly sorry for the harm this has caused.

Meli humbly undertakes to ensure these mistakes of the past are not repeated.

As a newly formed organisation, Meli is committed to providing compassionate care for all and helping those impacted to heal and feel heard. We will unreservedly acknowledge past practices and address their impact. We are also committed to regular review of our practice, ongoing evaluation and ensuring robust governance of our services to ensure the quality of our services and the proactive prevention of harm.
